Marco Sittico Altemps (Cardinale) acquistò il palazzo nel 1568 e ne fece la sua dimora romana. Tra il 1577 e il 1595 apportò notevoli trasformazioni all’edificio affidando i lavori a Martino Longhi il Vecchio.
