Built-in Palazzo Venezia , the Basilica of San Marco was founded in 336 in honor of the homonymous evangelist
Location and History
It is located square venice beside Palazzo Venezia . It was built in 336 and rebuilt in 833 by Pope Gregory IV . The baroque decorations are due to the restoration of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Description
The facade of the church, consisting of a lodge for the blessings, was built with marble coming from Colosseum , from Theatre of Marcellus and other ancient existing buildings. The three-arched portico and facade are in Renaissance style and denounce the influence of the architect Leon Battisti Alberti . The interior, though clearly Baroque, retains some remarkable elements of previous eras to witness to the long history of the church:
